Bio

Frank Heitzman, AIA, ASID is an architect and founding principal of Heitzman Architects, an architectural firm in Oak Park, Illinois.  His firm specializes in historic preservation and restoration of historic buildings and sites, historic research, accessibility design, and integration of accessibility in historic buildings and sites. 

 

Heitzman holds a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is licensed as an architect in Illinois and Indiana, and is an NCARB Certificate-holder.  He is Past-President of the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and the Chicago / American Institute of Architects Foundation.  Heitzman is the former chair of the Oak Park Universal Access Commission, and the Oak Park Historic Preservation Commission. He currently is a co-convener of Preservation Oak Park and a longtime member of the Oak Park Building Code Advisory Commission.

 

Heitzman’s firm has completed many residential additions, kitchen and bath remodeling projects in the Chicago area, buildings for the Park Districts of Evanston and Oak Park, public libraries in the Chicago region, churches in Chicago and Naperville, the ASCI Flash Center at the University of Chicago, the Lincoln Park Zoo accessibility master plan, interiors of The Children's Place, the first private institution in Chicago for aiding newborn children with HIV infections, and the Orthogenic School at the University of Chicago. Mr. Heitzman has had extensive experience in building restoration, preservation, rehabilitation, interior design and adaptive use projects.  His projects have received awards from the American Institute of Architects and the Illuminating Engineering Society. He was selected as Faculty of the Year by the Illinois Community College Trustees Association and he received the "Excellence in Education" Award from AIA Illinois.
